Plaas Meisie - Life on the farm

I told myself that I would never become a plaas meisie (farm girl for those unfamiliar with the term). I love the outdoors and relaxing in nature but I draw the line at plaas meisie. Fast forward a couple of years and it looks like that’s where my future is heading. Thanks mom. FOX RANCHES, dry, dusty and miles from civilization. HELP. Okay in all seriousness I’m acting like a brat the place is breath-taking and real, somewhere where you’ll find your feet firmly planted on the ground (figuratively of course).

I can use pretty words to sell you on the place, tell you that this is where I found my purpose but let’s keep it real. It’s an authentic, rustic and rough experience. I mean little to no electricity? Yes, that means no instant hot coffee before you take your first breath (shock, horror!). Although it makes you appreciate what you’re used to and you’ll have to work that little bit extra for what you want (that means you get your butt out of that comfortable bed and walk to the main kitchen area for that beautiful cup of coffee).

You might grumble but secretly you love it, the real work, using your hands, building fences, chopping up wood the old-fashioned way. Ladies, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a 21st century woman and hooray for feminism but damn there’s nothing like going back to basics and have your man chop wood for you (Just this time I’ll allow it). Watching him fix the bore hole that apparently always needs fixing (hey no shirts I’m not complaining – I just have to remember to cover my eyes from the ballies and beer bops), theres also watching them man the braai and don’t get me started on campfire cuddles (yes I’m single but a girl can dream).

Okay reining it back a bit I still have a shred of dignity. The chalets are equipped with just the basics, a family area to play board games, sit around a campfire and toast marshmallows, this is a place to create memories, bond with your family or significant other and yes figure out what’s important to you (don’t you just love a little introspection?). So yes, apparently I am a plaas meisie but I think it’s starting to grow on me.
